Industrial Gate Openers

Determining Proper Gate Opener Design and Function

Installing an industrial gate is one way to help ensure the safety of those in and around a warehouse, office, or worksite. Installing the right gate opener is key to ensuring optimal function.

Types of Industrial Gate Openers

Depending on the area you’re gating off, and the reason behind the gate, there are many options of gates to choose from.

  • Single gate opener. Works well in more narrow areas—no more than 10 to 12 feet wide—such as stairways and smaller driveways.
  • Double gate opener. Bi-parting gates are best for areas wider than 12 feet, such as entrances to parking lots, warehouse garages, and estate driveways.
  • Slide gate opener. Whether manual or automatic, these gates work best in flat areas that allow the gates to move easily along the track, and where there’s enough room on either side to support an opening gate.
  • Swing gate opener. One of the most important factors of this design is which way it will swing open. Make sure there’s enough room to do so.

Industrial Gate Opener Functions

Depending on the area you’re gating off, and the reason behind the gate, the way in which it opens will effect how well it functions.

  • Electric. A gate that swings, slides, or lifts opens via remote, code, or other feature, is especially helpful with larger gates constructed from heavy material.
  • Automatic. Having the gate open and close automatically, whether when someone enters a code or flashes a pass, helps to easily maintain security even without a guard present. Even if the gate isn’t electric, and just automatically closes after the person has passed through, this raises the level of safety in the area.
  • Solar. Electric gates require some kind of power, so why not make it more cost-effective to harness the power of the sun. Obviously, this is more beneficial for exterior gate systems in areas that receive a fair amount of sunlight. It’s a good idea to connect these systems to back-up battery power as well.

Factors to Consider

While planning the design and function of your gate, keep in mind:

  • Gate openers have certain weight limits they can support.
  • How much use will the gate get everyday?High use will require a more durable gate opener.
  • What effect will weather and terrain have on the gate and opener materials? High winds and heavy snow can restrict certain gates from functioning properly.
