DIY Gate Operator Maintenance

Tips for Maintaining Your Security Gate

Gated driveway

Having a gate at the entrance to your home or office comes with peace of mind for a secure living or working environment. However, in order to keep the gate in proper working order, it requires regular maintenance. Depending on the type of security system in place, there are a several DIY gate operator maintenance techniques you can use to make the most of your investment.

Hinge and Chain Lubrication

Opening and closing of swing or slide gates creates wear and tear overtime on the components involved–especially hinges and chains. By lubricating joints, fittings, bearings, and other areas of contact with standard grease (available at your local hardware store) you’ll ensure fluid movement of your gate and prevent breakage. It would be best to lubricate in the warmer months to prevent freezing. You can also use silicone spray to help prevent parts from freezing in the winter.

Adjusting Gate Tension

Many slide-operating gates require chains and a tension apparatus. If the chain on the gate is starting to sag more than two inches (a little sag is necessary), it needs to be tightened. If the chain is in a tight straight line, there’s too much tension. This could lead to more wear on the components inside of the gate operator.

Solar Panel and Battery Maintenance

If your gate operates on battery power, clean the solar panels annually or change the gel battery every few years. If your gate is still losing power with a new battery installed, check all connections and the battery regulator. Make sure the battery in your gate’s control system is also in working order.
