Farm Gate Wheels
Why You Want Them
Having a farm gate is supposed to make it easier to access fields, pastures, and other areas of the farm. If the gate door is hard to open, it’s not as easy to use. Adding wheels to your farm gate can help solve this problem.
How Wheeled Farm Gates Can Help
If your gate opening is drooping from weak or weighed down gate posts it can drag along the ground. Not only is it harder to open, but it can damage your gate and property and become more of a hassle than advantage.
With seasonal and weather changes, even the best set gate posts can shift over time unless it’s set in concrete. Instead of replacing the whole gate, you can add wheels to help it glide along the ground.
Types of Farm Gate Wheels
Decide where the wheels would do the most good. Typically they would go underneath the framework of the vertical poles where the gate opens. This could be one pole or two for double gates.
The wheel needs to be big enough to withstand the weight and support the gate. Not only will it make it easier to open or close, you no longer have to pick up a heavy door and carry it to keep it from dragging across the ground.
Search the shed for recyclable wheels, including old wheelbarrow tires, machinery tires, or metal wheels from old farm equipment. An old wheel or tire with any type of existing axle attached to it can be securely wired to a metal gate. Fasten the horizontal piece of axle to the bottom gate rail or pipe with heavy wire. Make sure the wheel or tire will stay upright without wobbling.
Test the gate to see if it glides easily and adjust as needed. Protect your investment in a farm gate and everything it’s meant to protect.
